Notes
- Abstract:
- This section of PP MS 20-3 contains the famous religious poem ‘Utendi wa Kutawafu Nabii’ concerning the death of the Prophet Muhammad in Medina. Information about the death of the Prophet is found in the Hadithi (religious book written by the Prophet’s companions) upon which this poem is based. The present Utendi however provides a narrative full of additional legends and myths not to be found in the Hadithi. This is typical of Swahili poems based upon religious themes. The poem itself is of great interest and merit, especially because it gives a rare and unselfconscious popular view of the Islamic teaching on what happens at death. ( en )
