Abstract:
This section contains 5 copies of the Utenzi wa Ras li Ghuli, of which only one is the complete copy of 4294 verses. There Other copies are incomplete. The section includes a few pages of notes on the poem written by Allen. The utenzi narrates the victory of Muslim forces, under the leadership of Omar, Ali and the Prophet Mohammed, over Yemen. The Arabic narrative of these events, contained in the book Futuhu ‘lYamani, has traditionally been very popular along the East African coast. ( en )

Biographical information: The publisher’s preface to the 1979 publication of Ras li Ghuli identifies Sheikh Mgeni bin Faqihi as an Mtumbatu who was born in Unguja. Sheikh Mgeni was a religious teacher in Mbweni, Bagamoyo, and in Bagamoyo he composed this epic, using as his source the Arabic book entitled Futuhu ‘lYamani
