- Abstract:
- This section contains various items. First, there is MS 343 that provides 20 pages of religious historical information about the death of Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Mohammed, and the religious conflict that arose afterwards. As it is known in the Qur’an, the supporters of Hussein rose in revolt to take revenge of his death. These notes were written in Lamu, in 1947, by unknown author, however the Ms belonged to Sharif Shee Ahmad bin Sheikh al-Husayni who could have written it, but this is not stated in the text. Second, MS 344 contains five distinct items. First, there are historical notes on the East Africa Coast, with special reference to the northern settlements and the islands. The notes provides also specific information of the Sultans of Pate and Siu, and about Sultan Majid of Zanzibar at the time of his conquest of Siu at the expense of Bwana Mataka, the ruler of Siu. And finally, we find information about the Nabhany dynasty, one of the most important families of Pate that originated from Oman and settled in Pate in the 18th century. A genealogy of the dynasty is included with specific reference to Bwana Kitini, an important ruler of Pate. Afterwards, there is a short poem by the mythical Swahili hero Liyongo Fumo that is mostly unreadable. Third, there is one poem about the people of Lamu and Pate attacking each Other; this is a typical genre of poetry in Swahili, where people of different communities communicate their views on each Other by means of poetry. The poem also provides historical information at the 19th century. This poem can also be found in the ‘Diwani ya Muyaka’, the collection of poems by Muyaka bin Haji, in the Hichens collection at SOAS. The fourth section of MS 344 contains a history book, in Arabic, about Arab history. And finally, there is another dialogic poem set in Lamu between two people discussing land issues. ( en )

- Biographical information: There is no biographical information on the three women who wrote the Utendi wa Haudaji. -- Fumo Liyongo is a mythical Swahili poet and hero, and it is tought that he composed many oral songs and poems narrating about his life time, which is around the 12th and 13th century.
