|a Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf (1909-1995) was born and educated in Vienna, gaining a PhD in anthropology from the University of Vienna in 1931. A grant from the Rockefeller Foundation enabled him to study at the London School of Economics, under the anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski. In 1936, he went to the Naga Hills in northeast India for his first fieldwork; over the next four decades, he worked extensively in south & central India, northeast India and Nepal. In 1950 he was appointed Professor of Anthropology at SOAS, where he established the Department of Anthropology. During his career, he published seventeen books, most of them ethnographies of tribal cultures. He was President of the Royal Anthropological Institute (1975-77) and a pioneer in the field of visual anthropology. |

|a These Apatani men are performing a dance just before they set out, with Assam Rifles, to attack the Nyishis of Licha : they carry spears and shields, brandish their machetes and wear shoulder armour of blackened sago palm fibres : Several also carry bamboo tubes of cooked rice on their backs : Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf, who accompanied them on the raid, described the dance in his diary: 'When I woke up this morning at 4-30 am I heard the chanting of Chige Nime a shaman :, interrupted now and then by shrill cries, followed by a humming sound, which at first I took for the noise of swarming bees : But when dawn came, I realized that this was produced by the young Apa Tani warriors and that close to the place where Nime was singing a sacrificial monument of bamboo and leaves had been erected.' A few minutes later, a dog was sacrificed and the war party set out from the Apatani valley toward the Kiyi River valley, to the west. |
