Abstract:
These Apatani men are performing a dance just before they set out, with Assam Rifles, to attack the Nyishis of Licha : they carry spears and shields, brandish their machetes and wear shoulder armour of blackened sago palm fibres : Several also carry bamboo tubes of cooked rice on their backs : Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf, who accompanied them on the raid, described the dance in his diary: 'When I woke up this morning at 4-30 am I heard the chanting of Chige Nime a shaman :, interrupted now and then by shrill cries, followed by a humming sound, which at first I took for the noise of swarming bees : But when dawn came, I realized that this was produced by the young Apa Tani warriors and that close to the place where Nime was singing a sacrificial monument of bamboo and leaves had been erected.' A few minutes later, a dog was sacrificed and the war party set out from the Apatani valley toward the Kiyi River valley, to the west. ( en )
