Anissa became involved in the 25 January 2011 Revolution after seeing her children participating. Since then she was involved in a number of civil society and charitable organisations. She founded Enlightened Egypt, an organisation that addresses citizenship values, freedom of speech and equal rights. She is executive director of the Sir Magdi Yacoub Foundation, a member of the board of the Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs, treasurer of the Pugwash Society and co-founder of Think Tank for Arab Women.
