Abstract:
Anissa was born in 1953 in Cairo. Her mother was a doctor and became director of the Al-Shifa Hospital in the Gaza Strip. Her father was a judge and was arrested in Gaza by Israel during the 1956 war. He went on to become a governor and eventually Minister of Justice under Nasser. He was responsible for repealing the ‘disobedience laws’ (bayt al-ta’a) Anissa went to Cairo University, studying in the Faculty of Economics and Political Science. Afterwards, she worked at the Council of Arab Economic Unity at the Arab League for 14 years. After the Arab League headquarters in Cairo were closed, she went to work in an investment bank, becoming the assistant general manager. Anissa became involved in the 25 January 2011 Revolution after seeing her children participating. Since then she was involved in a number of civil society and charitable organisations. She founded Enlightened Egypt, an organisation that addresses citizenship values, freedom of speech and equal rights. She is executive director of the Sir Magdi Yacoub Foundation, a member of the board of the Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs, treasurer of the Pugwash Society and co-founder of Think Tank for Arab Women. Anissa became involved with the Al-Dostour Party. At the time of the interview, she was writing a column for Al-Tahrir newspaper and was also involved with civil society organisations. Anissa believes that cultural reforms are just as important as political reforms for Egypt. ( en )
