|a Khuloud was born in the Shubra neighbourhood of Cairo in October 1985. Both her parents were leftist activists. Khuloud studied psychology at Cairo University from 2002 to 2006. After which she completed a 1 year diploma in clinical psychology and was hired as a teaching assistant in the same department. Khuloud began her Master's degree in 2007 and had just finished her degree at the time of the interview. Khuloud participated in protests in solidarity with the Second Palestinian Intifada and also against the US war on Iraq in 2003. Through this, she became active on campus and participated in the first independent students’ union in 2006, raising student demands as well as demands for democracy, and was also involved in Youth for Change, which opposed the extension of Mubarak’s presidency and the inheritance of the presidency by Mubarak’s son. In 2008, Khuloud joined the Association for the Freedom of Thought and Expression to work specifically on the topic of student rights. After participating in the 25 January 2011 demonstrations and other protests in Tahrir Square, Khuloud joined Nazra for Feminist Studies and began working as a psychological counselor/consultant for women survivors of sexual violence. After the ousting of Morsi on 3 July 2013, Khuloud stopped participating in political activism. At the time of the interview Khuloud was also deputy director of the AFTE. |
