Scope and Content:
The book begins with maps of the globe, continents, and various nations before focussing on the Ottoman Empire, and in particular sanjaks (districts) in Greece and the Balkans. The sequence of maps is briefly interrupted by a short series of views of Ottoman fortresses. Like the maps, these views are charmingly executed in watercolour. Interspersed among the images are text pages written in Ottoman Turkish and describing the regions depicted in the maps. We have not had the opportunity to look at these text pages in any detail but they are perfectly legible to anyone with a knowledge of Ottoman. The book appears to be intact (except for f. 3r, which has been cut) and retains what seems to be its original binding of green velvet. The paper used for its pages is of various types, some with clear European watermarks (see other watermark document).
Scope and Content:
There appears to be no title page or indication of the book’s author. For some reason, the work has become identified in the Library’s records with the famous geographical work written by Katip Çelebi in the early-17th century (the Cihannüma). That the manuscript, however, does not date from this period is evidenced by the political geography of the maps (particularly of N. America), by the stylistic qualities of the painting (for example, the baroque cartouche on the map of the UK), and by the European watermarks of some of the paper (see other document concerning watermarks). All these clues point to the second half of the 18th century (the watermarks give a terminus post quem of the 1750s, see AC folder on paper). Another indication of the book’s date is its depiction of North America: California is shown as an island (it was not until the third quarter of the 18th century that it was known for certain to be a peninsular), and the continent is labelled New England, New France, New Spain, etc., with no indication that the United States had declared independence. It should be noted that New France collapsed with the handing over of Canada to the British in 1763. However, given that this map can only have been based on another, it could well be out of date, and does not provide a definitive terminus ante quem. Perhaps more relevant in this regard is the fact that certain of the Balkan maps (which are likely not have been at all out of date) show parts of the Dalmatian coast to be under Venetian control, which indeed they were until 1797, when the Republic of Venice fell to Napoleon. It is, then, almost certain that the atlas dates from the second half of the 18th century, and (if the map of America is anything to go by) arguably to the earlier portion of this period.

Bound in green velvet, this fascinating little book contains a series of fold-out maps of the world executed in watercolour. Iterspersed between them are text pages whose contents are extracted from the first version of the Cihannuma, the famous but unfinished Turkish geography written in the mid-seventeenth century by the Ottomam scholar Katib Celebi (1609-57). Several features - including the style of its paintings, the political geography of its maps, and its European watermarks, date this book to the second half of the 18th century. Though based on the Cihannuman, the manuscript is not a simple copy, but a highly idiosyncratic adaptation whose maps and text place particular focus on the Ottoman Empire's Balkan provinces, which is wehre it may have been produced. -- Contadini, Anna (ed.), Objects of Instruction. Importance: for the history of cartography; for the knowledge on the approach to the "outside" in the 18th century Ottoman conceptualization of the world; for the history of the interactions between the Ottoman empire and Europe; for the history of intellectual cooperation in the 18th century Ottoman world, given that the manuscript is a highly idiosyncratic updated version of Celebi's geography; for its focus on the Balkans and what that may reveal about the importance of this region at the time; for important codicological aspects, for example, the different types of paper used, including European ones, as evidenced by the various watermarks.
