The Manchu Collection at SOAS, University of London is a hidden gem. Nearly all of the titles in the SOAS collection bear Chinese titles. The orthography of early electronic cataloguing tools did not allow the addition of Manchu script titles. And, as the Library reorganized its physical collections to save space, the once separate Manchu collection was integrated into a broader rare book collection.
We are working to uncover titles. This current collection is a proto-type of the the larger digital collection to come. Building the proto-type allows us to calculate costs, design efficient workflows, determine cataloguing and conservation needs, etc.
This project also provides content to our partners at manc.hu. They are building the tools that will bring additional utility to these and other Manchu language texts.
For additional texts, see the Manchu collection at Leiden University Library.
