The J.P. Mills collections is derived from the larger archive of the same name in the SOAS Library's Archives & Special Collections

James Philip Mills (1890-1960) worked as an anthropologist-administrator in northeast India during most of the first half of the twentieth century and was later Reader in Anthropology at SOAS. His several ethnographies of Naga groups are still regarded as authoritative. His collection of approximately 1,500 images are held at SOAS and the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford. The images in the SOAS repository are almost entirely from a set of albums holding black and white prints.
