Notes

General Note:
Journal of Thomas Powell, September - December 1871, recording his voyage in the John Williams to the north western out stations of the Samoa mission. This was the same voyage described by James Vivian. Powell joined the ship at Samoa. He describes the visits to the Tokelau group - Olosega (Quiros), Fakaofo, Atafu; the Ellice Group [Tuvalu] - Nukulaelae (Mitchell Group), Funafuti, Vaitupu, Nukufetau, Nui (Netherland Island), Nuitao (Spider Island), Niulakita (Independence Island); the Gilbert Islands (Kingsmill Group) [Kiribati]- Nanumanga (Hudson Island), Nanomea (St Augustine Island), Arorae, Nukunau, Peru [Beru], Tamana [Gilbert Islands, Kiribati] and the Loyalty Islands [New Caledonia]. Powell gives detailed descriptions of the people and customs of these islands. There are also 24 loose illustrations accompanying the journal - they appear to be press copies of ink drawings. There are 18 drawings illustrating the chapels and houses of various islands, and 6 maps of different islands. The journal has been edited in pencil.
