|a The 17th-century Rani Pokhari and the Balgopaleshwor temple at its centre were severely damaged in the earthquake. Their reconstruction was inaugurated less than a year later by the president, yet the reconstruction process was mired in controversy. While the government authorities wanted to rebuild it in concrete as an open space with commercial potential, activisits and stakeholders stressed its historical and cultural importance and pressed for following traditional methods and materials for reconstructions, including rebuilding the temple to the original design instead of the dome-shaped design that had been imposed by one of the Rana prime ministers in an earlier renovation. In the end, the Rani Pokhari and the temple were rebuilt to original designs using traditional methods and materials. |
