500        |a Sub-Collection description: The SOAS Picture Archive became an official collection in 1990, based on photographs and other visual media held by the School and the School photographer. As of 2016, it consists of over 1,400 images in a range of formats, including prints, negatives, slides, postcards, mounted and framed prints, display boards and printed materials. -- Exterior and interior views of the School of Oriental Studies, formerly the London Institution, at Finsbury Circus are available from its inception, including an engraving of the London Institution by Robert Wilkinson in 1820. A number of photographs record the preparation for and construction of the Philips Building, and the interior of SOAS Library from its first use to the present day is well-represented. -- There are early groups of staff and students with the first two Directors, Sir Denison Ross and Sir Ralph Turner. During the 1930s to 1970s there are few images of students, although staff are better represented (particularly in the 1930s and 1950s), and some staff group photographs outside the Bloomsbury Building exist from the 1980s. Several key events at SOAS are pictured, including the inaugural event at Finsbury Circus in 1918, the official opening of the Philips Building and the opening of the Special Collections Reading Room, as well as a number of other events both social (such as Sir Cyril Philips' 80th birthday party) and academic.
500        |a Series description: This Series consists of photographs and negatives of groups of SOAS staff and students. These range from 1918-1920 'Army' classes in Turkish, Arabic and Chinese, to departmental and general staff group photos of the 1990s. SOAS staff groups include formal group photographs of staff at Finsbury Circus, including the Library staff, from the 1930s; departmental and administrative staff from the 1940s/1950s and 1980s; Senior Common Room from 1957 and 1980s, and Honorary Fellows of SOAS in 1991. Informal photographs include staff and student formal dinners; Sir Cyril Philips looking at plans for the Philips Building with students outside the Bloomsbury Building; and groups of people attending academic events. A few photographs cannot be identified as to occasion, location and/or individuals present. As of 2016, this Series includes 146 images (including 7 rolled prints), of which there are -- Colour: 6 prints, 2 mounted prints, 4 negatives -- Black and white: 65 prints, 20 mounted prints (3 together), 36 negatives, 2 postcards -- Framed prints: 2 colour, 4 black and white (9 prints) -- only a selection have been digitised.
