|a Southwestern Courtyard, Yadana Man Aung Pagoda, Nyaung Shwe Town, Shan State. --- This royal Buddhist temple was built in 1866 by the Shan ruler Sawbwa Sao Maung (1848–1926) in the southern region of Shan State. The ruler's close relations with the Burmese court in Mandalay resulted in cultural exchanges. For example the temple's octagonal stepped tower may have been a prototype for the Kyauktawgyi Temple built by King Mindon in Mandalay, while the arched doorways may have been inspired by the Italian style arches built at the Mahamuni Pagoda in Mandalay as part of its renovation after 1884. The arches were later filled in with display cabinets collectively known as the Inner Museum. |
