- “My mother gave me a pouch of earth from our garden in Taipei, a tiny bottle of water and a gourd. She told me to pour the water into the well of my new home and sprinkle the earth around my garden. That way I wouldn’t have any problems acclimatizing to my new environment. The gourd was meant to protect me from illnesses.”
