General Note:
Biographical history: General Stanislaus Francis Leslie (known as Stanley Menezes) was born in Bombay [Mumbai] into an Indian Catholic family in 1922. He was educated at St George's College, Mussoorie. He joined the British Indian army in 1942 and commissioned as an officer in 1943. He was an acting Major in the 3rd Battalion Indian Grenadiers which was attacked by irregulars in the North-West Frontier as it travelled by train from Thal Fort in the Kurram Valley to newly designated Indian Territory. Menezes was awarded the Shaurya Chakra award for his actions in commanding the Battalion following the attack. He was later a staff officer at General Headquarters in 1947. He was posted to Baramulla, Kashmir following the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947. He later served as Vice-Chief of Staff of the Indian army. In retirement he was a historian of the Indian army.
