Tape 89
Inder Kumar GUJRAL, former Prime Minister and foreign minister
of India, a refugee in 1947, interviewed by AW at 5 Janpath, 28
Jan 2000
cassette a dub from minidisc
Q: how feel about rein's between I and P
A: 'the partn of I on 47 meant diff't thins to diff't people;
Indian polity never accepted partn on the basis of 2 nation
theory; we do not believe on 2 nation theory, didn't believe
then, ... our accepting a secular society totally contradicts 2
nation theory'
Q: saying I doesn't accept Pak
A: 'we have accepted, respect and have a vested interest in
maintaining integrity of Pak as a state, .. no thinker in I ...
wd beleve we do not accept Pak, we do accept Pak ... we want
them to prosper, we want them to stabilise; but if anyon in Pak
wants to tell to us to accept 2 nation theory, these are two
diff't things'
Q: so accept Pak, but deny basis on which it was established
A: 'this was basic farwell by imperial rulers, to divide
wherever they left'
Q: feel about dismal reins between I an P
A: '... I;ve been advancing cause of friendly reins between the
two cos ... thos I'm a refugee, that doesn't embitter me at all
... not commenting on system Pak sd have, that's for Pak people
to decide .. ' (and ref to Gujral doctrine)
Q: Gujral doctrine, mts with NS, and Lahore didn't achieve
anything; what is the problem
A: '... the prob is some sectors of society in Pak, mil rulers
included, they cannot accept the Lahore process, or the process
myself and NS had advanced and that was sustained by AB
Vajpayee; after all who are protesting against that process, the
militants, the fundamentalists, and some rulers of Pak, the
army, at all'
Q: s Asia haunted by unfinished bus of partn settlement
A: India enjoying excellent relans with other cos of s Asia ...
'Pak also, don't think any basic diff, K being used by muj to
create problem internally ... the inability of Pak rulers to mak
a cohesive state induces them to divert people's attention to
non-issues; the agenda was set by the Govt of India Act ... I
and P can still, and must, live as good n'hours, respecting each
others integrity' |
