- Biographical history: Śaokata Osamāna (also transliterated as Shaukat Osman) was born in Sabalsinghapur, Hughli, West Bengal in 1917. He was educated at Aliah University; St. Xavier's College, Calcutta and the University of Calcutta (1941). He migrated to East Pakistan following Partition. He taught at Dhaka College and Chittagong Commerce College. He was the author of a number of well-acclaimed novels, including, 'Jaani' [Mother] and 'Kritadaser Hasi' [Laugh of a Slave].
