500        |a Biographical history: Major General C. R. Dutta was born on 1st January 1927 into a family from Sylhet, Bengal. He was educated at Asutosh College of the University of Calcutta and Daulatpur College in Khulna. Dutta joined the Pakistani army in 1951 and served as company commander during the 1965 Indo-Pakistan War. He fought for the independence of Bangladesh as a commander for the Sylhet sector of the Mukti Bahini during the Bangladesh Liberation War. Following the independence of Bangladesh, he became the first Director General of Bangladesh Rifles. In 1988, following his retirement from the army, Chitta Ranjan Dutta was a founder member and first President of the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council. In this role he campaigned for a secular constitution for Bangladesh and the rights of minorities.
