500        |a Biographical history: I. A. Rehman is a leading Pakistani peace and human-rights advocate. He was born on the 1st September 1930 in Hasanpur, Harayana, India and grew up in Palwal, Haryana a predominantly Hindu town. His father was a nationalist Muslim lawyer who was opposed to the Partition of India. Rehman attended Aligarh Muslim University. His family was attacked in during Partition violence in Harayana in 1947. His family moved to Lahore, Pakistan following Partition. Rehman worked as a movie critic and journalist for the 'Pakistan Times'. He was sacked in 1970 for his leading role in the national strike held by the journalists' trade union. Rehman and other dismissed journalists established the progressive newspaper 'Daily Azad'. In 1972, Rehman was returned to the 'Pakistan Times' as assistant editor but left again after two years. In 1978, he was appointed executive editor of the politically independent 'Weekly Viewpoint'. In 1989, Rehman was appointed as the chief editor of 'Pakistan Times'. Following the military coup in Pakistan in 1990, he left the paper. He is the director of the independent Human Rights Commission of Pakistan and the founding chair or the Pakistan-India Peoples' Forum for Peace and Democracy, an organisation which promotes grass-roots dialogue in the two countries.
