JAMSHER village outside Jalandhar; now four extended Muslim
families in the village - out of 3/4,000 houses; before partition
were 2/300 M families; Jat Sikhs killed 29 village Ms as they were
leaving in 47; village now half Sikh, half Hindu - visited 18
March 1997; everyone says relations in village now good, and no
evident sign of tension
KARAMDIN - elderly Muslim, says didn't leave cos of the love of
non-Ms, and live in the centre of the village, so didn't feel
insecure; wears sort of truban
TAJ BIBI - Karamdin's wife, elderly and wrinkled
Mohammed HUSSAIN - about 70, village Muslim, balding
with Karamdin in khabristan, adjoining the small but well kapt
mazar of a Sufi pir which is respected by all communities; none of
graves marked, and local Ms complaining about encroachment; bhang
(cannabis) growing wild by the roadside and near the graves
Shiv SINGH - Jat Sikh from village and lambradar (village revenue
man); owns 24 acres; clearly on good terms personally with the
