General Note:
Biographical history: Harkishan Singh Surjeet was born in 1916 in Ropawal, Punjab. In 1930 he joined the Naujawan Bharat Sabha [Youth Society of India] movement and was imprisoned by colonial authorities in 1932. Surjeet joined the Communist Party of India (CPI) in 1936 and was a founder and leader of the Kisan Sabha [Peasants Union] in Punjab. During the Second World War, he was imprisoned by the British authorities. During Independence and Partition Surjeet was full-time Secretary of the CPI in Punjab. He was elected to the Central Committee and Political Bureau of the CPI in 1954. Following the split of the CPI in 1964, Surjeet joined the Communist Party of India (Marxist). He became General Secretary of the CPI (M) in 1992, a post he held until his retirement in 2005. He died on 1st August 2008.
