General Note:
Biographical history: Edward Behr was born in Paris on 7 May 1926 to a family of Russian-Jewish descent. His family fled to England from France following the German occupation. He was educated at Lycée Janson de Sailly and St Paul's School, London. He was commissioned into the British Indian Army in 1944 as a Intelligence Officer. Behr served in Indonesia and Southeast Asia immediately following the Second World War. Following the war, he was posted to the North-West Frontier, British India with the Royal Garhwal Rifles. In Peshawar in September 1947, Behr ordered tanks to fire on Pathan [Pashtun] rioters who were attacking Sikh community. After leaving the army he studied History at the University of Cambridge and began working as a journalist. He became a foreign and war correspondent for Reuters, 'Time', and most notably 'Newsweek'. Behr wrote a number of books, and, in later life, produced television documentaries. He died on the 26 May 2007.
