SHASHI BHUSHAN
interviewed (briefly) in Delhi, 13 Dec 1996, about his ideas on
relationship between partition and birth of Naxalism in central
Bihar
Harvard-educated economist, sympathetic to Marxist Leninist
groups; born in Champaran, Bihar
17 - spread of Naxalism largely confined to central
Bihar; 'before 47, most of the 1'lords in this
area ... were Muslims, and after partition most
of them migrated to Pak, so there was suddenly a
void ... and the imm people who took over altho it
was illegal ... most were either Kurmis ... and some
Bhumihars ... this c Bihar has a very high propn of
SC popn, and intermediate caste people were also
consdd inferior in Hindu case heir, and dal its were
not supposed to accept them as masters or to obey
their orders’
50 - Kurmis 'wanted to thrust their feudal privileges on
people on lower rungs, dalits, which accg to Hindi
norms is not acc to them, so a tussle has been brewing
which has been taken adv of by Naxals'
63 - 'I think the sudden gap created by partn is one way
contrg to the Nax violence in Bihar'
74 - only few landlords families stayed; some families, one
brother stayed, another went to Pak - and still in
contact; but only those who had big properties in
Patna stayed' lists areas where you still find big
houses, imambarras and mosques
100 - M zamindars went to w Pak - 'the whole idea of Pak
came from the western side, so they went that
side'
102 - some villagers still say Ms were fair landlords, and
better than Hindu catse landlords
