500        |a Biographical history: Jack Jacob was born in 1923 into a Calcutta Baghdadi Jewish family. He attended Victoria School in Kurseong. He joined the British Indian Army in 1942 and served in Iraq, North Africa and Burma. Following Partition he served in the Indian Army commanded an infantry division during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965. He was Chief of Staff of the Indian Army's Eastern Command that defeated the Pakistan Army in East Pakistan during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War and drafted the Pakistani surrender document. He retired from the military in 1978. In the late 1990s he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and became a member of its national executive. Jacob later served as the Governor of the states of Goa and Punjab.
