General Note:
Biographical history: Qurratulain Hyder was a leading Urdu novelist, academic and journalist. She was born in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh in 1927 and educated at Indraprastha College, Delhi and Lucknow University's Isabella Thoburn College. In 1947, Hyder left Dehradun during rioting, escaping on train. She later moved to Pakistan and in moved to the UK in 1951. Hyder published the novel 'Aag Ka Darya' [River of Fire] in 1959. She returned to India in 1960. Hyder worked as a journalist and published short stories, literary translations and novels. She was Managing Editor of the magazine 'Imprint', Bombay (1964-68), and a member of the editorial staff of the 'Illustrated Weekly of India' (1968-75). Hyder later worked as an visiting lecturer at Aligarh Muslim University and universities in the United States. She died on August 21st 2007.
