General Note:
Biographical history: Alys Faiz (neé George) born in London in 1915. Daughter of a Walthamstow bookseller; joined the Communist Party of Great Britain in the mid-1930s (though never in the Communist Party of Inda). Joined the Free India League in London and worked as the unpaid secretary to Krishna Menon, the league secretary. Travelled to Amritsar in 1939 to visit her married sister. Married distinguished leftist Urdu poet, Faiz Ahmed Faiz in Srinagar in 1941. Remained in Pakistan after Independence and helped resettle refugees following Parition. Faiz Ahmed Faiz was arrested in 1951 following his alleged role in the "Rawalpindi conspiracy", he was released in 1955. Alys joined the staff of the 'Pakistan Times' as editor of its women's and children's pages. From 1973, Alys worked with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). Following the 1977 military coup in Pakistan, Alys and her husband left the country to live in exile in Beirut, Lebanon. Alys wrote for the radical weekly Pakistan paper 'Viewpoint'. She returned to Pakistan in 1983 and continued to publish articles and work with UNICEF and other nongovernmental organisations. Alys Faiz died on 12 March 2003.
