- Abstract:
- This section of MS 53503 contains 7 letters exchanged between W. Hichens and the Editor of the East Africa and Rhodesia journal, Mr F.S. Joelson. The correspondence is about the status of Swahili as a lingua franca. Hichens argues that Swahili should be taught in its vernacular form, rather than in its standarized form. The following letters discuss the so-called ‘Old African manuscripts’ and the preservation of such material. Hichens discusses the value of the Chronicles of Mombasa and the Chronicle of Kilwa, among Other material mentioned in the letters. This section ends with loose pages from the Journal itsef. ( en )
