General Note:
The back of the photograph is inscribed, '[notice] white paint on foreheads', and 'medicinal? skin treatment?' Additional notes accompanying the photograph state: 'Group of Sakalava. Notice especially the white earth on their faces. They daub themselves over with it, when headaches or earaches appear. We saw some with absolutely white faces, and others with earth on the ears noses, and other parts of the face.'
