General Note:
The back of the photograph is also incscribed, 'Journey to Sakalava 1908'. Additional notes accompanying the photograph state: 'Notice large wooden block of wood in womans [sic] ear. It measures 4 inches across, and is inserted into the stretched out lobe of the ear. In its centre is a button of the french [sic] administration.'
