General Note:
Additional notes accompanying the photograph state: 'Two typical Sakalava. Notice large white shell (felana) on the forehead. These shells, ground flat, cost from 2frs.-25 frs. Formerly they were used as charms, but now appear only to ornament the wearer.' The back of the photograph is inscribed, 'Sakalava / Journey to Sakalava / 1908'.
