|a Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf (1909-1995) was born and educated in Vienna, gaining a PhD in anthropology from the University of Vienna in 1931. A grant from the Rockefeller Foundation enabled him to study at the London School of Economics, under the anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski. In 1936, he went to the Naga Hills in northeast India for his first fieldwork; over the next four decades, he worked extensively in south & central India, northeast India and Nepal. In 1950 he was appointed Professor of Anthropology at SOAS, where he established the Department of Anthropology. During his career, he published seventeen books, most of them ethnographies of tribal cultures. He was President of the Royal Anthropological Institute (1975-77) and a pioneer in the field of visual anthropology. |

|a These 'Tibetan' bells were placed on view during negotiations between two Nyishi clans in Dorde, a Nyishi settlement in the upper Panior Nadī valley : although Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf had little to say about this meeting, he described another only a few days before in Takho, a Nyishi settlement in the Kiyi River valley : the dispute involved, among other allegations, ten stolen mithuns and a murdered mother : the leader of the clan responsible for these crimes named Teji, was forced to pay compensation for the murder, offering to the plaintiff named Epo, a Tibetan sword 'for his mother's ribs;...a Tibetan bell for her knees, a cornelian bead for her eyes, two strings of yellow Tibetan beads as price for her bowels, and at last a bronze bracelet for her arms : above that, he Teji : gave one Tibetan bell to appease Epo's wrath about his mother's murder and seal the peace pact to be concluded : Epo and his party closely scrutinised every object determined not to be content with anything inferior : In the dao sword : they could find no fault, but the Tibetan bell offered for the knees was refused as inferior and they would not even look at the half-broken cornelian bead : teji tried to make them accept a bell metal plate instead of the maje bell : but that plate was of Assamese origin and therefore regarded as inferior : But when he produced an old Tibetan bell metal plate for Epo's mother’s knees it was accepted and Teji gave the maje bell : first refused as payment for the knees in addition to the cornelian bead for the woman's eyes : there was no objection against the yellow beads and the Tibetan bell paid to soften Epo's grief also passed the scrutiny of the experts : But the bronze bracelet an apparently very ancient piece possibly of pre-historic origin was found very unsatisfactory and after long arguments Teji went to another store cupboard whispered to his wives and brought out at last a second bracelet of different type : this he gave Epo in addition to the first and though the Piliapu party Epo's clan : had talked about a cloth for the skin they did not press the claim and declared themselves satisfied.' Behind the bells we can also see several bamboo pieces which were used to enumerate grievances during negotiations. |
