- Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf (1909-1995) was born and educated in Vienna, gaining a PhD in anthropology from the University of Vienna in 1931. A grant from the Rockefeller Foundation enabled him to study at the London School of Economics, under the anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski. In 1936, he went to the Naga Hills in northeast India for his first fieldwork; over the next four decades, he worked extensively in south & central India, northeast India and Nepal. In 1950 he was appointed Professor of Anthropology at SOAS, where he established the Department of Anthropology. During his career, he published seventeen books, most of them ethnographies of tribal cultures. He was President of the Royal Anthropological Institute (1975-77) and a pioneer in the field of visual anthropology.

- These Nyishis are gathered in the village of Talo to discuss several different feuds between various clans : the negotiations lasted for more than a week, and eventually Apatanis became involved, and still no resolution was achieved : the issues concerned mithuns stolen, Tibetan bells promised but not received, as well as land and marital disputes : this particular group, however, appears not to be engaged in active negotiations and may be resting or discussing strategy : Negotiators usually indulged in long speeches, enumerating the wrongs of the other party and marking each crime by laying down a small piece of bamboo : an aggrieved party often seized a member of the other party's extended family and held him or her for ransom : an interesting detail of the Nyishi legal system was that when a man held as ransom for someone else's misdemeanour, was freed, he was entitled to compensation not from his captors but from the man for whose crime he was captured.
