A grant from the Rockefeller Foundation enabled him to study at the London School of Economics, under the anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski. In 1936, he went to the Naga Hills in northeast India for his first fieldwork; over the next four decades, he worked extensively in south & central India, northeast India and Nepal. In 1950 he was appointed Professor of Anthropology at SOAS, where he established the Department of Anthropology. During his career, he published seventeen books, most of them ethnographies of tribal cultures. He was President of the Royal Anthropological Institute (1975-77) and a pioneer in the field of visual anthropology.
500        |a Thevoni, the 35 year old Eastern Angami head interpreter that travelled with Fürer-Haimendorf and J.P. Mills sits next to four monoliths he had erected himself : One of them stands for him, another one for his wife : thenizumi became his home village after he was banned from his birth village Pfesa-Chadumi for 7 years, following a fire caused unwillingly by his son : Where the path to Thenizumi leaves the one linking Cheswezumi and Chakhabama, a small rest-house in the forest stands next to a small artificial lake : around that area, many monoliths can be found : Monoliths were often erected in commemoration of feasts or other rituals gennas, conducted by individuals to gain and display their status : In some areas small monoliths were erected to symbolise love affairs the erector : among the Angami such monoliths are never carved or ornamented in any way.
