- Abstract:
- This photograph shows Betty von Fürer-Haimendorf talking to two Indian men in Hapoli, the government administrative centre that was built in the Apatani valley in the 1960s : Betty and her husband, Christoph, spent two weeks in the valley in March 1962 : the two Apatani boys in the background are dressed in a modern school uniform, but both wear the traditional hair knot, tattoo on the chin and earrings : Only one, however, also has the traditional skewer in his hair : the two Indian men probably Assamese or Bengali, are most likely government officials, employed by the North-east Frontier Agency, which governed Arunachal Pradesh from 1954 to 1972 : they may be Research Officers since the building to the left is the office of the Research Officer and his staff : the building in the background is the octagonal museum designed by Verrier Elwin.
