500        |a Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf (1909-1995) was born and educated in Vienna, gaining a PhD in anthropology from the University of Vienna in 1931. A grant from the Rockefeller Foundation enabled him to study at the London School of Economics, under the anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski. In 1936, he went to the Naga Hills in northeast India for his first fieldwork; over the next four decades, he worked extensively in south & central India, northeast India and Nepal. In 1950 he was appointed Professor of Anthropology at SOAS, where he established the Department of Anthropology. During his career, he published seventeen books, most of them ethnographies of tribal cultures. He was President of the Royal Anthropological Institute (1975-77) and a pioneer in the field of visual anthropology.

520 3    |a Apatanis live in compact villages and narrow houses approx : 12 x 4 metres and owned by nuclear families, in order to use every square metre of land for wet-rice agriculture : the front porch combined with the one in the back equals the interior space of an Apatani house and provides a place to work and relax in good weather : It is also a viewing gallery, as we can see here : the ritual platform in the foreground is the stage for large public ceremonies : In the background, we can see a few of the tall poles 15-20 metres high, that are erected during the Myoko festival celebrated in March : the houses here, in 1978, have changed little from those photographed in the 1940s : the roof no longer has thatch, the raised posts are shorter and the stairs have proper steps : the split and flattened bamboo roof seen here later gave way to corrugated iron sheeting, which is now the preferred material.
