520 3    |a This Apatani shaman stands in his army-style boots, on an animal skin on top of a small wooden stool placed on a ritual platform : His shawl, woven in a special design, large hoop earrings, head cloth and cowrie-shells on the strap of his machete sheath are part of his costume : In his hand he holds a piece of special bamboo, which has been split, with pieces of ginger stuck on its tips : the chick attached to it will soon be killed : Chanting a long ritual text, he uses the bamboo pieces to gesture toward two sacrificial animals tethered to the platform but not visible here : the is probably subu padu, a day-long ritual that confirms the eligibility of a man to sponsor a large feast Murung (Feast of Merit), in the future : It may also be a subu taniin, a minor version of the Murung (Feast of Merit) : the bamboo mugs at his feet are used to drink rice beer.
