Abstract:
These Apatani men are giving pieces of meat to young boys who are part of a larger procession during a festival Murung (Feast of Merit), : the man on the right holds a plate of meat, from which he and the man opposite him select pieces to give to the boys coming through in a line : In the background, a group of mostly women have gathered on their porch to watch this event : Each year, several Apatani families celebrate a three-week long feast, involving mithun and cow sacrifice, and complex gift-giving between the feast sponsor and various kin and ceremonial friends : a week after the large animal sacrifice, the boys and men of the feast sponsor's clan go on a procession : Dressed in ceremonial finery and brandishing their machetes, they walk through the entire Apatani valley only 8 kilometres long and 4 across, visiting all nine villages, and circumambulating each ritual platform in each village : at each platform, they perform a simple dance, after which they are given pieces of meat, rice beer and rice powder to eat, by the local people, as seen here. General Note:
Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf (1909-1995) was born and educated in Vienna, gaining a PhD in anthropology from the University of Vienna in 1931. A grant from the Rockefeller Foundation enabled him to study at the London School of Economics, under the anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski. In 1936, he went to the Naga Hills in northeast India for his first fieldwork; over the next four decades, he worked extensively in south & central India, northeast India and Nepal. In 1950 he was appointed Professor of Anthropology at SOAS, where he established the Department of Anthropology. During his career, he published seventeen books, most of them ethnographies of tribal cultures. He was President of the Royal Anthropological Institute (1975-77) and a pioneer in the field of visual anthropology.
