500        |a Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf (1909-1995) was born and educated in Vienna, gaining a PhD in anthropology from the University of Vienna in 1931. A grant from the Rockefeller Foundation enabled him to study at the London School of Economics, under the anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski. In 1936, he went to the Naga Hills in northeast India for his first fieldwork; over the next four decades, he worked extensively in south & central India, northeast India and Nepal. In 1950 he was appointed Professor of Anthropology at SOAS, where he established the Department of Anthropology. During his career, he published seventeen books, most of them ethnographies of tribal cultures. He was President of the Royal Anthropological Institute (1975-77) and a pioneer in the field of visual anthropology.

520 3    |a These Apatanis are rebuilding a house after a fire : Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf described the fire that burnt down part of Hija village, near his own camp site: '10 pm : I heard peculiar and ominous shouts and cries and saw from my veranda the fields alive with torches moving towards our camp : then I saw that red smoke was rising from Haja and realised that the village was on fire : For a moment I was anxious, thinking that in the confusion we might be blamed for the fire, having threatened to burn granaries as punishment for non co-operation in supplying porters :, but I soon saw that the men with torches were running from other villages toward Haja : the fire grew, exploding bamboos cracked, and huge flames shot into the sky : I thought the village with its crowded streets doomed and had already the worst forebodings for the progress of our work if a village of 600 houses had to be rebuilt.' As he explained, however, the damage was limited to only three burned houses owing to the speed with which Apatanis cut down the surrounding houses and poured water on the flames and ashes : In this photograph, we can see how the bamboo frame of an Apatani roof is put in place.
