500        |a These Monpas are celebrating a festival, called Phla, which is dedicated to local deities in the village of Lhou, near Tawang : Monpa religion combines the Gelukpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism with pre-Buddhist and animist elements, such as this festival : the crowd surrounds a group of dancers not visible here, under the canopy : In front are branches of the juniper tree, which are used as incense and to fumigate : Behind are snow-covered peaks of the high Himalayan range.
