Abstract:
This Nyishi man and his two wives are sitting on a porch in the settlement of Jorum, only two or three hours walk from the Apatani valley : although the context is unclear, their dress and the bamboo pieces lying in front of the man indicate that a negotiation is going on : During a negotiation, these bamboo pieces are picked up, amid interminable speeches, and placed cross-wise on the long piece of wood in order to enumerate grievances and/or demands : the amiable atmosphere suggests that this may be a marriage negotiation : the man wears the traditional hair style knot with skewer, earrings metal loops hanging from wooden discs in the lobes, band of cane below the knee and thick cane belt : Both wives wear those same earrings and a heavy set of necklaces, although the older woman is decorated with more expensive and intricate jewellery : She also wears a full tunic and a red sash around her waist, unlike her younger co-wife : Polygyny was common in most Nyishi populations in the region and is still common among many in interior areas.
