Abstract:
When Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf visited the Apatani valley in 1962, he arrived by Dakota airplane from Jorhat in Assam : an airstrip had been built in the flat paddy fields in the mid 1950s and was used to supply the government officers and soldiers posted there with food and other necessities : Here we see two prominent Apatanis : Both men have the traditional small knife hung around the neck, and both wear 'modern' hats and the red jackets given by the government to 'village headmen.' Nani Sala right, was one of the most powerful political leaders among Apatanis in the mid-twentieth century : His scarf, while new in form and shape, is handwoven with the distinctly Apatani diamond design : Kago Bida left, who was a shaman and also an influential man of the period, wears his hair with the traditional knot and skewer : He was especially close to Fürer-Haimendorf during his first visit in the 1940s.
