- Abstract:
- When Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf visited the Apatani valley in 1962, he arrived by Dakota airplane from Jorhat in Assam : an airstrip had been built in the flat paddy fields in the mid 1950s and was used to supply the government officers and soldiers posted there with food and other necessities : Here we see three prominent Apatanis : Nani Sala right, in airplane, and Padi Lalyang looking inside the airplane, were the two most powerful political leaders among Apatanis in the mid-twentieth century : Kago Bida left, in airplane, was a shaman and also an influential man of the period : Padi Lalyang and Kago Bida, both of whom wear their hair with the traditional knot and skewer, were especially close to Fürer-Haimendorf during his first visit in the 1940s : Nani Sala and Kago Bida wear 'modern' hats : all three wear the red jackets given by the government to 'village headmen.' Some or all of them may have flown back with him to Assam : In any case, all of them clearly enjoyed the novelty of the airplane. ( en )

- General Note:
- Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf (1909-1995) was born and educated in Vienna, gaining a PhD in anthropology from the University of Vienna in 1931. A grant from the Rockefeller Foundation enabled him to study at the London School of Economics, under the anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski. In 1936, he went to the Naga Hills in northeast India for his first fieldwork; over the next four decades, he worked extensively in south & central India, northeast India and Nepal. In 1950 he was appointed Professor of Anthropology at SOAS, where he established the Department of Anthropology. During his career, he published seventeen books, most of them ethnographies of tribal cultures. He was President of the Royal Anthropological Institute (1975-77) and a pioneer in the field of visual anthropology.
