520 3    |a This portrait of a Nyishi woman was taken near Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf's camp site in the Apatani valley : Her rough cotton tunic, funnel-shaped bamboo basket and wooden ear plug with a dangling metal loop mark her as Nyishi or Hill Miri, : Her set of necklaces and lower arm ornaments were everyday wear in the 1940s, among both Nyishi and Apatani women, but are now worn primarily on ceremonial occasions : She also wears an Apatani shawl, with a distinctive local pattern, which she probably received in exchange for cotton or pigs.
