520 3    |a This woman, sitting on a house porch, is one of the few Apatanis who used to make pots : In the 1940s, when this photograph was taken, Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf found potters in only two villages Michi Bamin and Hong, : By the time of his next visit, in 1962, pots were made only in Michi Bamin, and only by women in four low-status clans : Most Apatanis obtained pots from Nyishis by trading rice since Nyishi pots were considered superior to their own : apatanis and Nyishis made pots the same way, by hollowing out a lump of clay, holding a stone against the inside and shaping it with a wooden baton : By the 1980s, pottery had virtually disappeared and most Apatanis bought iron vessels in the bazaar.
