|a Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf (1909-1995) was born and educated in Vienna, gaining a PhD in anthropology from the University of Vienna in 1931. A grant from the Rockefeller Foundation enabled him to study at the London School of Economics, under the anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski. In 1936, he went to the Naga Hills in northeast India for his first fieldwork; over the next four decades, he worked extensively in south & central India, northeast India and Nepal. In 1950 he was appointed Professor of Anthropology at SOAS, where he established the Department of Anthropology. During his career, he published seventeen books, most of them ethnographies of tribal cultures. He was President of the Royal Anthropological Institute (1975-77) and a pioneer in the field of visual anthropology. |

|a When he arrived, Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf and his party were assigned a large piece of flat ground near Hija village as their camp site : Here, among the tall pine trees, Apatanis gathered to welcome and look at their strange visitors : Since the first European visitor entered the valley in 1889, others had visited on only five more occasions : all these colonial officials had brought soldiers with them, which Fürer-Haimendorf did not : Not surprisingly, he was the first outside visitor to be allowed to stay even near a village : Nada Roza, an influential man from Hija, is seen in the foreground : He was a member of an informal council of senior men : Each village had a council, which arbitrated disputes mostly over land, marriage and debts, issued judgements and imposed fines : this traditional authority structure was eroded and later disappeared when British and then Indian administration was imposed on the valley : Betty von Fürer-Haimendorf with a hat, stands behind him, as does an Indian man also with a hat, who was a member of Fürer-Haimendorf's party. |
