of experts is that the changes now occurring in the river bed and
adjacent banks cannot be interfered with advantageously. It may
even become necessary within a measurable distance of time to effect
a removal of the existing hulks and landing places for cargo to a
locality further east where there is deep water.
Industrial enteijmses.—A bean cake mill recently established has
proved successful, and it would seem that there is room for similar
enterprises.
The flour mills at Taicliou and Kaoyu have resumed working
during the year, and results have been by all accounts satisfactory.
Those at Tsingkiangpu and Haichou are still idle. The machinery of
the Chinkiang paper mill has been sold and removed to Japan.
Silk filatures.—The Talun filature with 200 reeling machines and
a staff of 500 workers, nearly all women, dealt with about 900 piculs
of cocoons, mostly from Wusi. The output of raw silk was about
