“...Scandinavian coasting " tramps" were recalled home,
presumably for the North Sea and Mediterranean trades, and the
regular China coasters were, in some cases, unable to meet the
demand for tonnage for the north before the close of the season, with
the result that few vessels could be spared for the coal trade, and the
highest rates known for some time, viz., 3 dol. (5s. were secured by
carriers from Japan and the Tonkin coal ports. In the regular China
charter trades (that is to say, Newchwang and Chefoo-Swatow,
Tientsin-Swatow and Yangtze ports-Swatow), controlled by the
principal British coasting lines, only a small increase in rates was
made for the end of the season; and, on regular routes, where freights
are subject to fixed tariffs, they have remained unchanged.
Emigration.—Emigration continued brisk throughout the year,
the demand for labour in the Straits Settlements, for the tin mines
and rubber plantations, having considers,bly increased the numbers
