Import trade.—An increase appears in practically every article
in the table of imports. The chief increases, however, are in grey
and white shirtings, flour, metal manufactures, kerosene oil, scientific
instruments and machinery, and woollen tissues.
Coal.—The importation of coal shows an increase of about 21,000?.
From Japan the import artiounted to 109,168?. (206,868 tons), showing
a decrease of about 20,000?. compared with 1911, while the import
from Fushun, Manchuria, has risen from 7,192?. (12,394 tons) in 1911
to 46,545?. (99,462 tons) in 1912.
Cotton goods.—Grey calico and shirtings show an increase of 115,200?.
as compared with 1911. The greater portion come from Japan,
the value of the Japanese imports being 586,643?. (45,514,163 square
yards), and the British import has declined once more, being
112,299?. as against 166,020?. in 1911. On the other hand, there
is an important increase of 99,425?. in the import of white calico and
shirtings ; 233,831...”
